Marble & Gold

My general rule of thumb when it comes to a DIY is: spray paint gold, let dry, enjoy.

But for our most recent project, we decided to go the extra mile by adding a marble finish.

We’ve been on the hunt for the perfect shelving unit to house our dishes and linens since February. The piece we had previously went back home with Anna when she moved out – miss you, Anna! Our biggest challenge was finding something that wasn’t too large for the space (our farmhouse table takes up a lot of real estate) but large enough for all of our stuff.  Ikea’s VITTSJÖ unit fit the bill!

Though I sometimes think Ikea is a synonym for pain in the ass, if you have the patience to put the furniture together you really can’t beat the affordable price. After purchasing two shelving units, we assembled first and spray painted second. I added on the sheets of marble contact paper to the top and bottom shelves, leaving the glass shelves as is. Truthfully, it wasn’t bad as I anticipated. It took about 5 episodes of Girls and only half a bottle of Pinot. #winning

All in all the total hack came in under $150 and was totally worth the extra do-it-yourself effort. With most buffets and sideboards starting in the $400 range, we were quite pleased with ourselves! 😉

We are officially dinner party ready (& happy to have our dining room table back)! Have you tried an Ikea hack recently?

*We used 2 rolls of marble contact paper and had a little left over.
