Beauty Buys: Cyber Monday Edition

What’s the cure for a food coma?

Shopping all the sales.

Okay, so maybe shopping doesn’t cure those post-Thanksgiving woes but it’s definitely producing some endorphins on my end.

I haven’t posted my Beauty Buys in a while but being that it’s Cyber Monday, I thought it was the perfect time to stock up on some deals, specifically in the beauty department). So whether you’re purchasing gifts or treating yourself (more power to ya, girl!), these are 5 of my favorite beauty purchases of late…all of which are on sale:

1 // DryBar Buttercup Blow Dryer (20% off on DryBar.com – no code needed)

At risk of sounding totally dramatic – this blow dryer has changed my life. The technology housed within this tool is pure magic. Having very thick and wavy hair, a good blowout was only achievable at a salon. But ever since investing in the Buttercup, I’ve managed to semi-master blowouts at home. PS – I like to use the Full Pint Round Brush, too.

2 // NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer (20% off on NARS.com – TAKE20)

Full disclosure – I’ve had this concealer for exactly one week but love it already. I previously used a different color corrector that I loved for coverage but not texture (it was too dewey). This NARS concealer (I use shade: honey) offers full coverage, brightens your under eye and the matte formula gives you the smoothest application – truly a dream combo.

3 // Frida Kahlo Kabuki Brush (25% off on Amazon.com – FKGIVE25)

Every brush collection needs a kabuki brush! I’ve been using this fluffy Kabuki brush for my setting powder and love it. The fibers are super soft and the large brush head makes application quick and seamless. PS – This 4-piece double ended set and highlighter brush + cleaning pad duo are also on sale and would make the perfect gift for your girlfriend!

4 // Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser (20% off on Glossier.com – no code needed)

I was sucked in by the millennial pink packaging and good branding (+ I will try anything Emily Weiss touches) but quickly became addicted after trying Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser. The formula is super gentle and smells amazing. It removes even the most stubborn mascara bits and eyeliner and leaves my skin feeling moisturized and hydrated.

5 // Passion Fruit + Rose Enzymatic Exfoliant Mask (20% off on LittleBarnApothecary.com + free shipping – CYBERMONDAY17)

I’ve talked about LBA before (here & here) and have remained a total loyalist since being introduced to their brand a few years ago. I try to #shopsmall as much as I can and with their Westside store being dangerously close to my apartment, I’m always dropping in and picking up new products. Their masks are a constant in my skincare rotation so I’m excited to stock up. I may or may not have also added their Aloe + Rosewater Balance Mist and Aromatherapy Roller Ball to my cart too!

Packing Like a Pro

Raise your hand if you’re an over packer.

over packer

*Raises two hands*

I prefer the phrase well-prepared but if I’m being honest, I’m just a product junkie who over packs. For most trips, I embrace it and fill my car up with all the things I don’t need. But when I’m flying, I try and consolidate. Fact: I have a real fear of having to lift my carry-on into an overhead bin and it falling on top of me.

over packer

I never have a problem editing down my wardrobe but definitely have trouble downsizing my accessories (ie: toiletries, hair products, makeup, my Buttercup). Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned my packing list and relied on three “tricks” to help keep my well-preparedness in check:

over packer

  1. Always keep your favorite toiletries in stock.

Should I ever need to flee my apartment in a hurry, I find comfort in knowing that my toiletry case is always packed. I keep a supply of travel-size shampoo, skincare samples, contacts & solution, a mini electric toothbrush, etc. on hand, always. I have a designated drawer to collect extra items while also keeping the essentials stored in my toiletry bag for quick packing. When I return from a trip, I make a list of items to replenish and go ahead and stock up so I’ll be ready for my next getaway.

  1. Knowing when to donate or keep those free samples.

Whether items are from a “gift with purchase” promo or cashed-in points at Sephora – I’m a sucker for miniature/travel-size anything (as discussed in Tuesday’s post). But it’s important to keep your stash stocked with only things you will actually use. I make a point to donate or give away samples and travel-sized items that I know I won’t use.

  1. Pack, assess, edit.

Though I tend to over pack initially, I always go back and edit my suitcase and toiletry bag. Usually after weighing them and realizing I’ve exceeded the 50lb limit but that’s neither here nor there. Once I’ve packed everything I think I need, I reassess and remove items that I could probably live without. It’s hard to do at first, but you’ll pat yourself on the back later. I usually make it a game – remove 5 unnecessary items and I reward myself with a drink. 😉

/ / /

And because I love reading about/seeing what other people keep in their bags (read: I’m nosy!), I thought I would share some of my favorite travel-friendly beauty products that I’ve packed for my trip…

over packer

In the hair care category – I need all the help I can get to extend my blowout. So I a few dry shampoo options, good shampoo + conditioner, and duck clips are musts.

over packer

For skincare – I like to continue my at-home (pretty basic) routine while on the road. Face wash, toner, and makeup remover – I can’t go without. I especially love Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser – the bottle isn’t huge so it makes it perfect for travel but it lasts a long time. The formula is so gentle (yay for no burning eyes!) and passes the white towel test every time. Not pictured is the moisturizer stashed in my carry-on. 😉

I would love to know if you have any go-to products for travel or any tips and tricks for packing! Read up on my carry-on essentials in this post

Beauty Buys

From lips to skincare – I’m sharing four of my favorite beauty buys that I’ve been using as of late…

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Oribe has expanded from hair to beauty and all my fellow Oribe-obessors are rejoicing. While I haven’t gotten my hands on their color products (give me some time and a few more paychecks), I recently ordered their Balmessence Lip Treatment. It was love at first sight because their packaging is perfection. (Working on the manufacturing side of cosmetics gives you a deep appreciation for even the smallest packaging details, y’all.) The formula is a little stiff at first, but it is deeply moisturizing and I feel like my lips immediately absorbed the balm. For someone who’s lips are perma-chapped, I’ve noticed a definite difference with just over 2 weeks of using it.

SONY DSC

It’s no secret that Anastasia Beverly Hills knows all there is to know about strong brows. I recently picked up their Brow Definer (the cooler sister of the Brow Wiz) and instantly felt like a professional brow groomer. The pencil formula is buildable and forgiving. The triangular tip is seriously genius.  I always like my brows look different every day. Sometimes I can pencil the perfect shape, other times my arch may be on point but my inner brow looks like a caterpillar’s head. So while I know that your brows don’t have to match exactly (they’re sisters, not twins!) I would like to work on my consistency so the ABH Brow Definer has become my new best friend.

beauty-buys-vol-6-2

Confession – I fell in love with a lip color from a Snapchat filter. Ugh, I cannot believe I’m saying that. Next confession, I actually went into Nordstrom and had someone help me find the closest match to said Snapchat filter lip color. And because Nordstrom is staffed with the most helpful angels on the planet, Analise didn’t judge me for whipping out my cell phone and asking her to help me match a screenshot. Naturally, MAC had the shade – Fast Play Amplified. MAC’s lipsticks are the best. Between the creamy coverage and strong staying power, I’ve been sporting this color almost everyday. It’s the perfect shade to transition into fall (before I start donning the dark winey hues).

SONY DSC

I’ve bragged on Little Barn Apothecary before and now that they have a brick & mortar, it’s easier than ever to try their line. I picked up the Sea Vegetable & Green Clay Recovery Mask from their shop at Westside Provisions recently… I’m hooked. I always try to start my week with a good mask to detox my skin from the weekend’s damage and this earthy green powder works wonders. Nothing beats a post-mask glow and when it lasts for days you know you’re working with the good stuff.

Bridal Beauty Buys

Apologies for the radio silence on G&J, you guys!

SONY DSC

If you follow me on Snapchat then you know I was out of town MDW and had an extra short work week taking Friday off to kick off the Bagwell’s wedding weekend.  Needless to say, I’ve been playing catch up.

After many months of planning and partying, we finally got our girl married this past weekend! I have to admit, I feel a little bittersweet about it. I’m so overjoyed for the happy couple (they’re literally perfect) but I’m going to miss all the festivities which served as good excuses for us to get together…and for Morgan to fly in from Boston. 😉

We prepped for the weekend by getting spray tans and mani/pedi’s.  I tried a new-to-me wax studio where CC literally gave my eyebrows a new life – I highly recommend! Saturday morning we all woke up as giddy as could be to get our hair and make up done at Glow Dry. It was so nice not having to fuss over my own hair and make up; we were able to enjoy each other’s company while simultaneously getting pampered. ‘Twas a perfect Saturday.

To keep our looks fresh throughout pictures and the ceremony, we packed a handful of products for easy touch ups – here are a few of our faves…

SONY DSC

Glow Dry exclusively uses Oribe products and by the end of your blowout it’s kind of hard not to purchase a product to take home with you. You’re practically drunk on the scent alone.  Ally and I both picked up Oribe’s Superfine Hairspray to keep our freshly styled curls and braids in tact.

SONY DSC

| J.Crew earrings – our gift from the bride! |

Not that we needed new lipstick but Stacey, Morgan and I hit up Nordstrom on Friday to pick up a new shade for our dresses.  Stacey chose Chanel’s Double Intensite in Light Rose and I chose NARS Funny Face. Both totally different shades but we couldn’t have been happier with our purchases.  I love the bright pigment and smooth application I got from my NARS tube. Stacey couldn’t quit raving about the staying power of her Chanel stain/gloss duo. She hardly had to reapply between all of the coffees and champagnes consumed.

SONY DSC

Little Barn Apothecary, a local brand that I’ve been meaning to try just so happened to be sold at the wax place I went to on Thursday. I took it as a sign and purchased one of their facial mists – Bamboo + Fresh Mint Clearing Mist – which I quickly became addicted to. Bamboo has natural silica which helps brighten your skin and combat shininess.

Wedding season is the perfect time to restock your beauty cabinet – hope this post inspired you to try some new products!

Beauty Buys

The theme for this week’s beauty buys – good things that come in small packages.

SONY DSC

I attended the CEW Beauty Insider Awards Demo last month for work and got loaded up with a ton of products. Most of which, I gave away because this hoarder doesn’t need any more things taking up bathroom real estate. However, I did pick out a few products to enjoy. Two of which have quickly become my favorites…

SONY DSC

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion – this new-to-me spot acne treatment is a miracle worker. I apply a small amount with a q-tip to any blemishes and untouched zits and by morning they are gone. You’re not supposed to use on any open or broken skin, so it also keeps me from messing with zits (which is never a good idea). The pink sediment sits at the bottom of the solution and doesn’t require any shaking. Just dip your q-tip and dot on the treatment.

SONY DSC

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a serial dater when it comes to mascara. By the time my tube is empty, I’m ready to try something new.  Benefit’s They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer is my latest find and I don’t want to jinx it but I think I may have found my mascara soul mate. Even though it’s technically a primer, I’ve been using it alone and love the separation and fullness it gives. When I’m going for a heavier look, I’ll layer my Lancome Definicils on top.

My next two faves were not CEW finds but impulse purchases instead. 😉 #NoRegrets

SONY DSC

Fresh Sugar tinted lip treatment (Honey) applies like buttah, in the best way possible. It’s so soft and moisturizing that I only need to apply ever so often. I love the light pigment but my favorite part is packaging – the lid screws on and stays put. There is nothing worse than pulling out your lipstick only to realize the cap is off and the stick is smudged, broken and disgusting. I don’t have to worry about that my Fresh lip tint and I love that.

SONY DSC

The last thing I need is another nail polish, but I’m a huge fan of Emily Schuman and wanted to support. 😉 Cupcakes and Cashmere for Formula X (Latte Run) has quickly become my new favorite nude. The formula is opaque, creamy and most importantly, durable. It’s a hue that looks slightly different on everyone’s skin tone but is clean and classic nonetheless. Emily’s other two colors (Haute Sauce & Peach Tea) are just as beautiful!

I would love to know what your current favorite beauty buy is – share in the comments below!

Beauty Buys

Today’s post is not for the faint of wallets.

SONY DSC

For this edition of Beauty Buys, I’ve turned to my roomies for their input on products worth the splurge. One of (the many) things we have in common is that our Mama’s taught us the importance of a good beauty regimen. As such, all three of us have developed a pretty pricey addition.

So while the price points of these 3 products are definitely on the higher side, just remember – you only get one face (& head of hair) in this lifetime. And with all the holiday sales, ’tis the perfect time to scoop up these treats at a discount!

SONY DSC

Anna | “I’m a sucker for skincare products and my three splurges are usually scrubs, masks, and creams. Bobbi Brown’s Buffing Grains was something I absolutely had to have the minute I tried a sample. I use it three times a week, mixed with my face wash and I will sometimes mix with just water for a deeper exfoliation. I’ve found that my makeup applies smoother, and my face looks brighter after each use.”

SONY DSC

Stacey | “I’m a firm believer in wrinkle prevention, pun intended. I purchased Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum for the first time three years ago and have been in a committed relationship ever since. Okay, I cheated one time (with a similar serum) and regretted it instantly. So much so, that I returned said serum and went crawling back to my beloved brown bottle. It’s pure magic, lasting up to 6 months and absolutely worth the splurge.”

SONY DSC

Bree | “It’s no secret that I l.o.v.e.Oribe products. While my moma has always stressed the importance of skincare, she also likes to call me out when my hair looks “dry as straw.” So I’ve developed quite the complex about keeping my hair looking shiny and soft. Oribe’s Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream is lightweight but thick enough to get the job done. I usually apply after my blow dry but it works just as well on damp hair. A mix between a leave-in conditioner and frizz tamer, this tube smells like heaven and lasts a long time, making it so worth the splurge.”

SONY DSC

*As always, of these options are our own.  We are in no way compensated by any of the aforementioned brands – we can only dream!

Beauty Buys

Hope ya’ll get paid this week because I’m sharing four of my favorite products in this month’s installment of Beauty Buys!

SONY DSC

Good make up and great hair are always worth the splurge.

SONY DSC

Not all texturizing sprays are created equal and once you splurge on Oribe you will never be able to settle for anything less. I realize I sound dramatic, but as I’ve mentioned before the scent alone will make you addicted. I love Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray because it gives my freshly washed hair the perfect about of grip and gives my two-day old blow out a refresh.  You can spray it on your roots for a little volume or mist your ends for added texture. It’s the best.

*For the month of October, Oribe has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc and released the above pictured Limited Edition Pink Design.

SONY DSC

There is nothing worse than looking at yourself in the mirror after a long day of work and meetings and realizing half of your make up is gone and your face is shine central.  Urban Decay’s Setting Spray is that product that you didn’t realize you needed in your life until you tried it. I spritz this oil-control formula in a T-formation across my face right before I walk out the door each morning.

SONY DSC

One product that I repeatedly switch up is mascara. I find ones that I like but don’t love and so when they run out, I move on to the next. Recently, I picked up this Lancome one at Nordstrom and have to say it’s one of the top contenders. Lancome offers a variety of formulas, with different wands to help you achieve whatever look you’re going for – voluminous, long-lashes, thicker, baby doll, etc.  I chose Defincils (a high definition option) because I like a full lash, not a lot of separation but still some extra length. It’s been about 4 weeks and I don’t have any complaints.

I’m probably the only girl who still wears eyeliner on the bottom of her eyes. Which means it takes one wrong move and a rain storm to look like raccoon.  I always apply with moderation and absolutely do not swipe all the way to my inner corners but even then if the liner starts to melt, I look like a train wreck.  Meet Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes – their eyeliner pencil stays put, applies smooth and sharpens nicely.  (Am I the only one that rages when a make up pencil of any kind doesn’t sharpen well??)

Both of these products haven’t left my make up bag and probably never will!

Never underestimate a good manicure, yall.

Nails

Who cares about PSL’s and blanket scarves when it’s finally appropriate to wear a dark hue on your nails! Like lipstick, a fresh mani can change your whole attitude.  I never feel fully put together when I don’t have my nails painted – to be honest, I feel like a boy. But with a fresh mani, I’m unstoppable…until it chips.  Then I need to take a day off work to recover.

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite fall shades that I’ll be rotating this season…

Beauty Buys

Time to put your face on.

SONY DSC

For my second installment of Beauty Buys, I’m sharing my favorites that all happen to be great for those of us who are always on the go.

SONY DSC

The older I get the more I realize how important sun protection is (my mother is shaking her head because she has been slathering me down with SPF 60 since I was born).  I first tried Supergoop! after receiving a sample in my Birchbox and purchased the full size just in time for Miami this weekend.  Supergoop’s super broad spectrum sunscreens help protect skin from UVA rays, in addition to providing the SPF necessary to prevent damage caused by UVB sunburn rays.  This sunscreen mist will not leave my side this weekend!

SONY DSC

A week later and I’m still celebrating National Lipstick Day with these two shades. One is more neutral, work appropriate while the other is bright and poppy. Like nail polishes, lipsticks are so fun to collect and can totally change the way you look and feel with a simple swipe. I love a matte lip and Clinque’s Matte Plum is currently my favorite shade.  It has the staying power without staining your lips for two days and four face washes later. This tube of YSL Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick (Peach Passion) is so dreamy.  The color goes on smooth and has just the right amount of shine where you don’t need a layer of gloss.

SONY DSCSONY DSC

My eyebrow game is growing and Anastasia’s Brow Wiz is the MVP (bad analogy?).  Confession: I’ve always kept my eyebrows waxed but was kind of a late bloomer on filling them in. After purchasing all the necessities after a session at Benefits Brow Bar, I become obsessed with perfecting my brows. Some days are definitely better than others but this brow pencil is almost fool proof.

SONY DSC

Solid perfumes are a thing…did you know? Great for travel and not to be confused with lip balm – I’m in love with this peony scent from L’Occitane. (I may or may not have a candle with the same fragrance.) A little dab on the wrist and neck – it’s never too strong and no one will call you out “who just sprayed something!?”  The best part?  It’s TSA friendly. 😉

Miss Lips

If I don’t have on lipstick I basically don’t have on makeup.

Well, according to my mother at least.

A swipe of lipstick or gloss can make you go from washed out to refreshed in 5 seconds. It’s an easy addition and makes you look put together – even when you haven’t washed your hair in three days and may or may not be repeating an outfit from the day before. So of course society has given us a holiday to celebrate this beloved cosmetic.

I prefer matte but don’t mind a good shine every now and then. In the Fall and Winter a dark oxblood stain is my go to and during summer, you can never go wrong with a berry pink!  I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites (including a darker shade I will be donning this winter) and I’ll be sharing two of my current must-haves in next week’s Repeat Offenders (vol. 2) post.

Beauty Buys

Some women collect shoes, some collect boyfriends, some collect stuff.

SONY DSC

I fall into the latter category and said stuff particularly pertains to beauty products. I’m a product junkie.  I blame my expensive obsession on working in beauty and lifestyle PR when I lived in New York.  I worked for an amazing boutique agency that specialized in beauty, health and lifestyle clients and our stock room was a beauty maven’s candy store.  I suddenly had some of the industry’s most luxe brands at my fingertips.  Flash forward two years later and I’m spending large chunks of my paychecks at Sephora on dry shampoo and nail polish.

Though I have my trusty products that I rebuy consistently and don’t sway to other competitors…I do love to mix it up a bit.  What influences me?  Celebrity endorsements, magazines’ “must have” round-ups, smart packaging – I’m a marketer’s dream demographic.  You name it and I will come up with a reason on why I have to have that $25 tube of blue lipstick.

SONY DSC

So as G&J grows – I wanted to introduce a beauty component.  After all, my beauty cabinet holds my most prized possessions, next to my bar cart of course. 😉

In this new series – “Repeat Offenders”*– I will share my monthly must-haves.  Whether it’s something I’ve been purchasing for years, or a recent discovery that I’ve fallen in love with – these products have received my seal of approval.

SONY DSC

Oribe Gold Lust | This product is a necessity for summer months.  Restoring shine and taming frizz are two of the many problems this nourishing hair oil tackles.  It also offers UV protection for your strands – ya’ll the sun is damaging on all accounts.  The scent is absolutely intoxicating, as all Oribe products are, so be warned the scent alone will get you addicted.

SONY DSC

Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-Powder | Dry shampoo is essential to my ‘only-wash-my-hair-twice-a-week’ routine.  I spotted this dry shampoo powder (via Stacey’s bathroom counter) and was intrigued. It later ended up being an impulse buy as I was checking out at Sephora (please tell me you all get suckered in to purchasing all the mini bottles that line the Sephora checkout counter!) and the travel size was just enough to get me hooked.  It’s lasting forever and I use it at least 2-3 times a week.  So I can only imagine how long the full size will last!  Not only does it extend my blowout but I love that it doesn’t make my hair grey like some aerosol dry shampoos.  I apply it at night, so all of the powder is absorbed by morning.

SONY DSC

Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Oil | Nothing disgusts me more than dry, peely cuticles.  Deborah always said that the first sign of a woman’s age is her hands!  Her cuticle oil is a nightstand staple and I apply it nightly to keep my manicure looking healthy.  The formula works fast and absorbs quickly, so there is no lingering greasy residue. Bonus – the scent is lovely!

SONY DSC

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer | Truth be told I’ve been purchasing Clinique face make-up since I was probably 14.  I’ve never used foundation, a simple press powder and blush will do.  But the older I get, the bigger my pores, the more oily face.  I’ve started exploring primers and pore refiners and this was another impulse buy (what is wrong with me!?) that I haven’t regretted.  I was recommended Laura Mercier’s concealer and loved it so much I was open to sneaking out of my Clinique comfort zone.  I apply this after my moisturizer and before my powder.  I can tell a huge difference in the longevity of my make-up and the oiliness as well.  It’s a keeper!

SONY DSC

Hope you enjoy this new series!  Please do share some of your cosmetic favorites – I’m always itching to try something new.

xo Bree

*Previously titled Repeat Offenders, I’ve updated my beauty posts to “Beauty Buys” to accommodate new products I’ve tried and cult favorites that I repeatedly buy.
